South Carolina is one of the few states where winners can remain anonymous and the mystery person has until April 21 of next year (180 days after the drawing) to redeem the winning ticket. If they don’t, the massive jackpot gets redistributed back to the 46 states and jurisdictions that participate in the Mega Millions game.

This huge prize was claimed by two people in New York and Iowa. The other winner, 51-year-old Lerynne West of Redfield, Iowa, says her newfound wealth will be spent on a “new car” and a “long vacation”. The charitable organization is set to launch next year. It will provide grants to groups aiming to relieve problems surrounding subjects including “poverty and hunger, education, animal welfare, and veteran affairs.”

Next up, a woman from Merrimack, N.H., rang in the new year with this stunning cash haul. Then, she spent the next two months locked in a court battle to keep her name private. Her lawyers, according to the New York Times, argued that she feared for her safety. Furthermore, she was concerned about people coming out of the woodwork to demand a stake in her prize. She ultimately won the case, but a judge ruled that her hometown must be made public. The newspaper says the woman has donated a combined $250,000 of her winnings to Girls Inc. of New Hampshire, a girls empowerment group. Finally, Richard Wahl, a 47-year-old from Vernon, N.J., was the sole winner of this jackpot. He holds the record for being the largest one in the history of the Garden State. The now-retired production manager revealed that he kept the ticket in a fireproof safe after winning. Furthermore, he checked the numbers 15 times. Consequently, when his mother called and asked if he was the “somebody in New Jersey” who won the prize. Wahl says he initially lied and said, “absolutely not”. It was until he was ready to come forward that he told the family. The winning numbers were picked by a machine. “We believe it’s God’s plan,” Wahl says. In addition, he plans to use the cash as “life-changing money for family, friends, [and] people in need”. Some of it also may go toward his goal of restoring a 1963 Corvette.

Mega Millions confirmed there was one winner for the whopping $1.6bn (£1.2bn) Mega Millions prize.

The jackpot numbers were: 28, 70, 5, 62, 65, with a Mega Ball of 5. The odds of choosing those numbers were said to be one in more than 300 million.

People had been lining up at service stations and stores nationwide for a chance to win the huge prize.

Tickets for the Mega Millions draw are sold in 44 US states, the District of Columbia and the US Virgin Islands and there had not been a top prize winner since July.

“The moment we’ve been waiting for finally arrived, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Gordon Medenica, lead director of Mega Millions Group.

“This is truly a historic occasion. We’re so happy for the winner, and we know the South Carolina Education Lottery can’t wait to meet the lucky ticket holder.”

But who that lucky winner is may remain a mystery to the public. South Carolina is one of eight states where lottery winners can keep their anonymity.

What happens now?

The winner can decide to take a cash payout of $913m after tax, or opt to have it paid out in instalments over 29 years.

Financial advisers have debated which option is better, and factors to consider include where a person lives, how much money they need each year, investment return rates and changes in federal taxes.

Those who think the US top tax rate will drop over time should choose instalments. Those who do not trust themselves to avoid frivolous spending should also go for instalments, experts say.

But, if a winner has the ability to invest the lump sum properly, that would create a heftier nest egg.

Furthermore, the huge jackpot had lottery ticket buyers speculating on what they would do with the money if they won. Some dreamt of buying an island or a fast car, others of opening shops and creating jobs.

The lottery firm said Tuesday’s draw saw 36 people win second prize, and 419 win the $10,000 third prize.

Mega Millions was created in 2002. It has seen a number of changes to the rules over the years that have reduced the odds of winning, leading to larger jackpots.

The California winner of the Mega Millions jackpot Tuesday night is even luckier than anticipated: the jackpot has been revised based on final sales to $543 million, up from the estimated $522 million!

The winning numbers from Tuesday night are 1-2-4-19-29 with a Mega ball of 20. The jackpot will reset to $40 million for the next drawing on July 27.

The California Lottery says one lucky person who won the Mega Millions lottery bought the ticket at Ernie’s Liquors in San Jose. Ernie’s Liquors will receive $1 million from the lottery winnings.

The jackpot is the largest in California history and third largest Mega Millions jackpot in the game’s history. In March, a winning ticket sold at a New Jersey gas station totaled $533 million.

The winner has not yet claimed the prize. They have 365 days from the draw date to turn in the ticket.

The winner has two options to receive their prize: A payment plan for about $543 million paid out over 29 years or a lump cash sum of $320.5 million.

Furthermore, Eight other tickets matched all five white balls. Six tickets were valued at $1 million each, sold in Arizona, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota and two in New Jersey. Two tickets, sold in Massachusetts and Texas, are worth $3 million each because of the optional Megaplier.

Richard Wahl, 47, of Vernon Township, N.J., bought his Mega Millions ticket, worth $533 million, the day before the March 30 drawing at a convenience store located on a route to work. He opted to take $324 million in cash now rather than the full value in installments over 30 years.

The sole winner of the world’s 10th largest lottery jackpot moved last year to New Jersey and works as a production manager at food-service manufacturer, state lottery officials announced Friday.

“We’re a humble family, and we’re going to keep our roots,”  Wahl said Friday as lottery officials presented his oversized check. “We are not the type to run out and spend all the money and have a great time and party it up.”

Ameer Krass, who identified Wahl earlier by looking at video surveillance footage around the time officials said the winning ticket was sold, called Wahl a regular at his gas station mini-mart but kept mum on the winner’s name.

Wahl moved to New Jersey in July from Michigan and works at AAK Foodservice. He said he and his family had not made a decision about moving. His decision for the cash prize means he will collect about $175 million after federal, state and local taxes.

At first, Wahl said he looked at the ticket, he thought he had won $1 million.

He became emotional when recounting the moment he realized he had won the grand prize.

Humble and Kind Winner

“It didn’t sink in. It was truly amazing.” Wahl said he walked upstairs and told his wife they were going on vacation. “We hit it,” he told her.

Then they reviewed the numbers about 15 times more just to be sure. He put the valuable ticket in a fireproof safe and didn’t leave the house all weekend. Friday marks two weeks since the 11 p.m. ET drawing.

Wahl would like to rebuild a 1964 Corvette and said he hopes to do charity work with the winnings. He already has consulted a team of financial experts, who were present at the lottery’s news conference.

“For us, we believe God has a plan,” Wahl said. “It’s not only life-changing money for me, we want it to be life-changing money for others”

“Family, friends, people in need.”

His mother has been on a reduced income in recent times. Now he will be able to help her.

Mega Millions’ 4th Largest Jackpot In History

It’s the fourth-largest Mega Millions jackpot ever and comes six years to the day of the biggest jackpot in game history, a monster $656 million pot split three ways.

The winning numbers in Friday’s drawing were 11, 28, 31, 46 and 59, plus Mega Ball 1.

Apparently, large jackpots and fewer winners are not random but a strategy by Multi-State Lottery Association. This is a plan conducted in order to draw more attention to big winners.

Mega Millions used to work differently: Players picked five numbers from 1 to 75 and a Mega Ball of 1 to 15. The odds of winning the top prize were 1 in 258,890,850.

However, Mega Millions changed the rules in October. Now players pick numbers from 1 to 70 and a Mega Ball of 1 to 25. The odds of winning the jackpot are now 1 in 302,575,350.

Reducing the number of balls for the first five numbers increases the chances of winning a smaller prize. However, raising the number of Mega Balls makes it harder to win the jackpot, and in turn, it grows and grows, collecting jackpot chasers who emerge when the payout balloons.

Furthermore, New Jersey is like most states with laws restricting winner anonymity. Consequently, the state commission says anyone can get the details about winners after making a formal request. Only one person has set up an LLC before claiming a prize, the state lottery told NJ.com.
